August 26, 2008 — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga County Public Library will celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout the month of September.  Librarians want to remind parents that a library card is the smartest card a child can carry and the most important school supply of all.

The observance was launched in 1987 when then Secretary of Education, William J. Bennett, suggested a national library campaign.  “Let’s have a national campaign..every child should obtain a library card – and use it.”  Since that time, libraries across the country have celebrated National Library Card-Sign Up Month with special programs and offerings.

“A library card can be obtained free of charge at your local library,” said Denise Headd, Public Information Specialist for the Onondaga County Public Library.  Privileges of using the card can be granted on the spot.  “A library card enables patrons the ability to borrow books, magazines, popular CDs, DVDs and audio books, all free of charge.  The card also enables patrons the luxury of access to our computers, Internet use and special software and databases.  When visiting the library, patrons will see a wide range of special programs, art exhibits, computer classes, homework help and even story times for our youngest users.”

Patrons are asked to keep their cards safe and secure, and ready to present during library transactions.  Librarians can replace a card if it has been lost or stolen to prevent abuse of the card by another person and material losses to our libraries.  “We refer to library cards as the ‘smartest card in your wallet,’ said Headd.  If you consider the cost of a hardcover book, audio book, or a popular CD or DVD, you’ll realize how much money you save using your public library.”

Check out your library during the month of September, sign up for a library card and see what you’ve been missing!   Library programs and art exhibits are free and open to the public during normal library hours.  Contact your local library for more information on programming and hours of operation.
