Who Uses the Collection?
The Regional Grants Collection offers information for grantseekers, funders and donors. It is designed to serve the needs of a broad range of nonprofit organizations: from the grassroots, neighborhood-focused organization to the larger institutions; from the volunteer grant seeker to the experienced fundraiser.
The materials are targeted to nonprofit organizations that qualify under IRS code 501c(3) to receive private foundation grants, including schools, neighborhood organizations, service agencies and government agencies and whose purposes are charitable, educational, scientific, religious, literary or cultural. Some grants can be awarded to individuals as scholarships or for artistic endeavors. Scholarship information, including individual funding for education, and information on for-profit business funding is located in other parts of the library's collections and is not included in the Regional Grants Collection.
Collection
As one of over 250 Foundation Center Cooperating Collections, the Central Library offers local library access to a core collection of Foundation Center resources. The Foundation Center is an independent nonprofit service organization headquartered in New York City. It was established in 1956 to foster public understanding of institutional philanthropy by collecting, organizing, analyzing and disseminating information on foundations, corporate giving and related subjects. One way the Foundation Center accomplishes its mission is through this network of Coordinating Collections.
The core of OCPL’s Regional Grants Collection includes the Foundation Directory Online and the Foundation Center Grants to Individuals databases, annually updated Foundation Center print directories and magazines on philanthropy, fundraising and nonprofits.
The Library supplements these core resources with additional reference and circulating materials about foundations, corporate and federal funding agencies, grants awarded in specific fields, fundraising for non-profit organizations, non-profit management and proposal writing. Use of the reference collection is free and open to the public all the hours that the Central Library is open.
See the Grantseeking pathfinder for more information about the library's resources. Additional related items available for circulation can be found in the OCPL's online catalog.
Services
Basic Grantseeking Workshops on how to use the Regional Grants Collection resources, including the Foundation Center's Foundation Directory Online, are given several times a year. Contact the Grants Collection Supervisor at the Central Library, by phone (315) 435-1900 for more information or to make arrangements for group orientations.
Web Resources
In addition to the resources located in the Central Library, the Foundation Center website is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to understand the world of foundations, grants and related topics. More useful links can be found on the Library's Grants and Nonprofit Web Links page.
